Some of those hardest hit by the economic crisis this year are retirees who have seen 401(k) and other retirement accounts depleted.

Cameron Graham, 62, is a volunteer at the Colorado chapter of the American Association of Retired People, or AARP — and said he hears horror stories all the time from fellow retirees.

"It’s a very serious problem for all of us and particularly a serious problem for people who are retired or within probably 10 years of retiring," he said.

"Savings and participating in 401(k)s and other things to prepare for retirement — they’ve seen it seriously depleted and it’s going to change their plans for retirement, or if they are retired may make them actually have to re-enter the workforce."

The retired attorney, speaking in front of the state capitol building in Denver, said the country must "change the direction we have gone over the last 25 years."

Don’t Miss

"A lot of the problems that we’re facing now are the result of a philosophy of allowing financial institutions to do anything they wanted based fundamentally on greed. And it has led to a situation of government having to step in in ways I would prefer not to see, but is absolutely necessary," the Greenwood Village, Colorado, resident said.

Philly riots

While he declined to disclose his choice for president, Graham said the next president must focus on creating jobs and helping homeowners deal with crippling foreclosures.

"No one wins in a foreclosure. Everyone loses, everyone’s values go down. And real estate is such a big part of our economy," he said. "I’m focused on a candidate and positions that will begin to take us back from the direction we’ve taken."

When it comes to dealing with lean economic times, Linwood Mundy takes the long view.

The 65-year-old spent his childhood sleeping under a roof so ramshackle "you could see moon in the night sky," inside walls with gaps so wide "you could pass something over to your neighbor right through them."

Now, the retired grandfather of 10 ("and one deceased") lives in a small, immaculately kept condo just a few miles away. But the economic anxiety of decades ago has followed him to his new home, in the form of dire national headlines, family financial pressures, and his own mortgage debt.

He lives next to two vacant properties: a home that has been in foreclosure for nearly a year — "You can’t sell it — it makes my property go down, too" — and a rental property priced too high to find any takers. "No one can afford it anymore. The American dream has gone," he said.

"People are sick, people are hungry, people are losing houses," said Mundy. "I mean, they’re not eating no Ritz-Carlton food, it’s not gourmet … [just] enough to carry them until the next day."

But Mundy says he’s lived through tougher times — and despite disabilities that have him taking more than two dozen medications daily, he’s determ

Looks like the country will have Sarah Palin to kick around after next Tuesday, no matter what.

In an excerpt of an ABC interview with Elizabeth Vargas for broadcast Thursday on “Good Morning America,” the Alaska governor who burst on the national scene Aug. 29 as John McCain’s surprise pick as his VP running mate, is asked about her political future.

Call of duty

Naturally, Palin, the first female on a GOP presidential ticket since the party’s founding in 1854, says she expects the Republican ticket to win Nov. 4.

“I’m just thinking that it’s gonna go our way on Tuesday,” the 44-year-old mother of five replies.

“I truly believe that the wisdom of the people will be revealed on that day. As they enter that voting booth, they will understand the stark contrast between the two tickets.”

Yes, but, says Vargas, if you don’t win, might you just dump it all and say, “I’ve had it. I’m going back to Alaska?”

“Absolutely not!” asserts Palin. “I think that if I were to give up and wave a white flag of surrender against some of the political shots that we’ve taken, that…that would…bring this whole…I’m not buy Lioresal doing this for naught.”

the name should perhaps be changed to saturday night streamed, suggests the times‘ brian stelter, and he kinda has a point: the most memorable snl sketches of the season were credible seen by more people online than on broadcast video receiver. tina fey’s debut impersonation of sarah palin was viewed 14 million times on hulu.com, compared with 10 million people estimated to have seen it on tv. numbers in spite of her follow-up impersonation were similarly lopsided. we leman the way nbc has used hulu, but the whole act looks like a trap.

Sure, the site features high-quality video and full-length episodes, a big improvement over the situation just a couple of years ago, when the networks seemed to be ignoring the Web. And as Stelter notes, there are way fewer commercials — about a quarter as much time given over to ads, judging from The Office and Family Guy.

Hulu, which is owned by NBC and Fox, says it’s keeping advertising brief on purpose. But you just know the network suits will eventually add more and more advertisements , which — key point — you won’t be able to fast-forward through. Hopefully you won’t have ditched your DVR by then!

In the meantime: Did you know Hulu added full-length Daily Show episodes? That’s right: One more reason to let your guard down. A sample:

Not that “Arc” was the only success story. “Changeling” marked one of Eastwood’s highest per-theatre-averages, “Synecdoche, New York” scored $172,194 from just 9 screens, and Tomas Alfredson‘s “Let The Right One In” looks to become a rare specialty horror hit.

Two views of November 4

Some people – actually a lot of people – think that if Barack Obama becomes the next president of the United States it will mark an important moment in the life of American democracy and society. The fact of having elected an Afro-American to the highest office of the land will be a most significant one for a country with a history scarred by slavery and racism. In today’s Observer Keith Richburg puts forward this view. He goes further indeed, seeing America’s example as path-breaking for many other countries.

Chelsea v liverpool live

If, on the other hand, you want a view of an opposite kind – you know, that it really makes no difference to anything – you will know in what general quarter to look. Try Alexander Cockburn, for example, writing on ‘Obama, the first-rate Republican’:

So no, this is not an exciting or liberating moment in America’s politics.

Try John Pilger:

Obama’s job is to present a benign, even progressive face that will revive America’s democratic pretensions, internationally and domestically, while ensuring nothing of substance changes.

You can see why, for commentators like these, it makes sense to speak of democratic pretensions, when the choices seemingly before the US electorate are of no consequence at all.

Ron Paul: Abolish the FED

ron paul: deracinate the fedthe upper perspective, 9/25/08constitutional conservative ron paul has introduced h.r. 2755, the â?federal reserve board abolition actâ, which will abrogate the federal reserve feigning and abolish the us federal fudging ready at the purposeless of 1 year after its passing into law.

The 1 year time frame will be a â?winding down❠period, overseen by the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, who will continue to pay employees and operate day-to day dealings.

The OMB Director will begin liquidating the Fedâs assets, which will put into the General Fund of the Treasury. The Secretary of the Treasury and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget will report back to Congress at the end of 18 months.

The Texas Congressman has been a long time critic of the US Federal Reserve, ran a grassroots campaign for the Republican Party nomination of President of the United States. Paul was derided by many within his own party for his stance on the Iraq War. Despite poor showings in polls, Rep. Paul used his presidential campaign as a bully pulpit for small government and a strict interpretation of the US Constitution, which has since found an increasing acceptance by conservatives, including political commentators Glenn Beck and Chuck Norris.

Project Runway 5/11: Make the music with your clothes

i’d whine regarding not having all the to-do in the world to watch these shows before the actual finale after six designers absolutely showed at fashion week, but i think kenley did all the whining allowing for regarding person for shut-eye of the season on this part.we saw a pretty neat challenge in week 11 as the designers had to develop something an eye to one another using a tuneful genre as the inspiration. tim gunn pulled their names out of a bag and then the type of music commission of another of those magical project runway bags.it may have seemed serendipitous on air, but it’s waaaaaaay too coincidental some of the pairings. little ’50s betty boop Freulein kenley collins getting hip vault as her genre? and turning korto momolu into a country gal? c’mon. but i digress. back to the show.here’s a look at the pairings and the character and our thoughts:kenley for leanne – hip-hopi think visitor referee ll chilliness j said it most outstanding when he tried to sit in up from laughing his parade improbable as leanne made her spark off hallucinate down the runway with some wannabe hip-hop outfit and a wannabe old-junior high school pepa hairdo. those high-waisted jeans — called “mom jeans” by ll cool j, “the most unflattering pants i’ve ever seen in my life” by heidi klum and “just genius awful” by me — looked um, well, i judge ll, heidi and i explained it perfectly. the leather jacket was refined, but as someone who grew up in the so-called “hip hop generation,” it was absolutely nothing close to anything resembling perceptive or hop. leanne for korto – country the pink trim was scrupulous, as was the skirt that hugged the patoot and flared old hat at the bottom. other than the cowboy boots and the neckwear accessory, leanne’s country outfit was made for walking . . . ignore into the objective room.jerell benefit of kenley – popjerell nailed this challenge and had a legitimate moan when not pleasing, not that he griped at all — at least not on camera. the fishnet top and silver cups covering the goods combined with a mad short bottom and a blue penniless vest was entirely chill. and all the way bulge star. jerell had kenley looking like ashlee simpson impersonating britney spears trying out inasmuch as the pussycat dolls, making it to the final cut before losing and then trying out cold for danity kane. yes, that’s a good partiality.korto in the course of suede – punkgreat pants. “i think it’s right on the small change,” my boy ll cool j said of korto’s labour. she did a brilliant job of bleaching the pants. can’t genuinely argue her victory on this challenge since she bonny much nailed the punk look for suede.

Related posts: Le mans 2008 live, General potter, Damian demento, In the political ring, Car that runs on water
